List of links where you can download some great (mostly) free software.

We maintain this list to make it easier for you to download the software we recommend without searching the internet and potentially finding a fake version or a malware site. We try to provide ninite (http://ninite.com) installers when possible to give you the most up-to-date link and headache-free installation. If we cannot provide a ninite installer, we provide a link to the official website to download the featured software.

Essential Tools

7-Zip

7-Zip is a free and open source file archiver. 7-Zip supports multiple archive formats including a custom .7z format that offers high file compression. 7-Zip can unpack even more archive formats, including virtual hard disks and disk images.

Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader is the go-to program to view Adobe PDF documents. Many other programs offer support to view PDF documents but Adobe Reader is the most reliable and secure. If you are on Windows 10, you will want to set Adobe Reader to be the default PDF viewer as it is much more reliable than the default viewer (Microsoft Edge).

Google chrome has quickly become one of the the most popular and (we think) best web browsers on the market. It supports fully automated updates to keep you safe from vulnerabilities and gives you a great browsing experience.

Google Docs

Google Docs is a collection of office suite applications that work entirely online. There is a web version of a word processor, spreadsheet creator, presentation maker, and form creator. All you need is a free Google account. Documents will save in your Google Drive but you can download them in a variety of formats including Microsoft Office formats.

IDrive is an online cloud data backup service with free and paid plans. We strongly believe everybody should have a backup of their crucial data. We also believe that backup should not be on the same device as the original copy. That is where cloud backups come in handy. Once you install the IDrive software you can select which folders you want backed up and select a backup schedule.

The Java Runtime Environment is required to open applications written in the Java programming language. Java is widely used due to it being supported on nearly all operation systems.

LibreOffice is a feature rich open source office suite developed by The Document Foundation. LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice with increased file compatibility and features. It offers many similar features to Microsoft Office at no cost. LibreOffice has support for Microsoft Office and Open Document Type file formats.

Microsoft Security Essentials / Windows Defender

Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender are Microsoft’s own anti-virus solutions. In Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 Defender is built in. For older versions of Windows, Security Essentials has you covered. Both programs are free and work well with Windows (better than many non-free alternatives).

If Google Chrome isn’t an option, Mozilla Firefox is a tried and true trusted internet browser. With extension support and speed in mind, Firefox is a worthy contender to Chrome. That it why it is a runner-up for our internet browser recommendation.

VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is a free and open source media (video and audio) player developed by the VideoLAN Project. VLC can play a large variety of file formats without the need to install additional codecs or additional setup. VLC Media Player also has a wide range of additional features such as DVD support and network streaming.

Notepad++

Notepad++ is a free and open source notepad and source code editor. Notepad++ supports multiple tabs and syntax markup for many languages to make coding that much easier. Notepad++ also comes with plugin support and the ability to preview files in a web browser (making it a fantastic HTML editor).

WinDirStat

WinDirStat is a free and open source tool used to view which directories are taking up the most space on your computer. It has support for multiple disks and partitions. WinDirStat provides you with a list of the percentage of used space broken down by directory and a tree map for a visual representation of your files.
