Police in Cockrell Hill Texas admitted to losing digital evidence from as far back as 2009 after the department’s server was compromised with Ransomware.
The department says the infection was discovered on December 12, 2016 and the Ransomware demanded $4,000 to unlock the files.
After consulting with the FBI’s cyber-crime unit, the department decided to wipe their data server and reinstall everything. Data could not be recovered as they backup system they had in place did not contain multiple versions of the files which meant, when their files became encrypted, the backup overwrote the good files that could have been used to restore.
